The Ca' d'Oro was initially built from 1420 to 1434 for the Contarini family. The home suffered changes of ownership and numerous alterations, including dividing the building up into separate apartments.
Baron Franchetti bought the Ca' d'Oro and restored it in 1894. He filled it with art - paintings, sculptures including bronzes, and furniture - before leaving it to the State in 1922. The Ca' d'Oro has Venice's most elaborate Gothic facade.
